PREMIERE: Young RJ ft. Pete Rock & Boldy James “Wait”

For Detroit native Young RJ, it must have felt like he was waiting in the wings his whole life. The son of R&B musicians and a student of the venerable J Dilla, RJ has been around the music industry from birth. While he has always been part of the Slum Village posse, it was only with the Evolution album in 2013 that he became a card-carrying member of Detroit’s most influential rap group.

Behind the scenes RJ had produced and engineered on almost every Slum album since their sophomore, Fantastic Vol. 2, but his early work was largely uncredited. When the group decided to take a break in 2005, RJ used the time to place beats with the likes of Little Brother, De La Soul, Eric Roberson, Proof, and 50 Cent. Before he could become a household name, the Slum Village signal shot into the night sky and much of the crew reunited in 2009. After Baatin’s passing and Elzhi’s departure, the group were put on pause yet again. It all came full circle when RJ officially joined the group and released two albums with T3 under the Slum Village umbrella between 2013–2015. But no matter what else was going on, RJ has been honing his mic skills and developing his own material.

Which brings us to his highly anticipated upcoming solo album, Blaq RoyalT. The first single “Huh?!” dropped on 4/20 and has that stutter-step bump that Slum Village is known for. Now he follows up that smooth joint with “Wait,” which MASS APPEAL proudly premieres right now. The heartfelt song has sparse instrumentation, with hard, snapping snares that seem to recall Goodie Mob’s classic single “Cell Therapy,” and the hook feels like it may have been sampled off a dusty gospel record. Top it all off with dope guest verses by Detroit up-n-comer Boldy James (who sounds a lil bit like Big Gipp on this one) and the legendary Soul Brother #1 himself, Pete Rock and you’ve got a reason to click “loop” in iTunes again.

Young RJ’s debut solo album, Blaq RoyalT, drops this summer. Click here to grab “Wait” on iTunes now.
