Why is This Mall Using DJs To Battle Black Israelites?

Two DJs have been called in by owners of the shopping mall at One Liberty Place in Philadelphia in an attempt to drown out the preachings of a sect of Black Israelites who have been verbally accosting their customers. About a half-dozen members of the Israelite School of Universal and Practical Knowledge gather regularly at the mall’s entrance and preach their message, which is strongly anti-gay, anti-women, and anti-white. Their hate speech has not been received well in the City Of Brotherly Love, and mall owners have tried to sue, but the preachers are protected by First Amendment rights. After receiving letters from customers saying, “My family and I will never be shopping at Liberty Place again,” mall owners knew they needed to take action.

The mall owners tapped DJ Liberty Place to take a stand against the Black Israelites, drowning out their rants with classic hits, including Michael Jackson and Ray Charles. DJ Liberty Place is actually not one DJ, but two men, Eric Pawlicki and Joe Moser. Pawlicki said the Black Israelites call him “DJ White Devil,” but he tries “not to let it get under my skin,” and retaliates by spinning Van Halen’s “Running With The Devil.” Moser feels like he is doing the a good service for the public, saying “I just hope by playing music that is fun and upbeat, we are uplifting people’s spirits even though other more negative things are being shouted at them.”
