Westside Gunn and DOOM Drop The First ‘WESTSIDEDOOM’ Track, “Gorilla Monsoon”
The villain returns
Westside Gunn and the elusive DOOM (no longer a MF) announced a forthcoming joint project earlier this month, aptly titled WESTSIDEDOOM. And despite yesterday’s abrupt end of The Missing Notebook Rhymes, DOOM’s weekly free music program with Adult Swim, today new raps are still being delivered elsewhere. Below, you can stream “Gorilla Monsoon,” the first release off the Alchemist and Daringer-produced WESTSIDEDOOM album.
Griselda Records’ in-house beatmaker Daringer handles production on “Gorilla Monsoon,” and provides a subdued, shrill soundscape for the two MCs to unleash their lyrical storm. Gunn’s nasally flow leads the way and DOOM’s sporadic delivery takes over the second half. Upon confirming the WESTSIDEDOOM LP in an Instagram post, Gunn stated it’s “one of the illest projects I’ve ever heard. When you think ART, this is it. The RAWEST, FLYEST, GRIMIEST shit you’ve ever heard in YA LIFE.” The words raw, fly and grimy certainly apply describe “Gorilla Monsoon,” so Gunn’s offered a pretty accurate preview so far.
It’s unclear if the timing of the release of “Gorillas Monsoon” has anything to do with the termination of DOOM’s relationship with Adult Swim. The expected eighth installment of The Missing Notebook Rhymes was nowhere to be found yesterday, and last night, MASS APPEAL obtained a statement from Adult Swim confirming what many feared: “Adult Swim is ending our relationship with DOOM, and thus, the remaining Missing Notebook Rhymes will unfortunately have to remain…missing. We are glad to have had the chance to provide the previous free tracks to our fans.”
Neither Gunn nor DOOM has provided a release date for WESTSIDEDOOM yet, but per a Westside Gunn interview with Hypebeast, “I honestly feel from what I did and what he did on those two songs with Alchemist and Daringer, niggas is in trouble and the whole world is about to understand what I’m saying.”
We are ready to understand.
