This Video of Vin Diesel Voicing Groot in 5 Different Languages Is Everything

The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 comes out on May 5, three years since we last saw Chris Pratt and company, uh, guard… the… galaxy? This was the movie that “even non-Marvel fans love,” with its witty lines and perfectly curated soundtrack moments. It was also the movie that first made us go, “WAIT, CHRIS PRATT IS A HUNK???” Most importantly, this was the movie where Vin Diesel voices a tree with literally three words of dialogue. We, of course, now fondly know him as Groot, the bark-skinned creature that can only say, “I am Groot.” But delivering those three words was apparently not that much of a breeze.

Diesel actually told Total Film, “It’s very, very challenging because you’re limited to three words. There’s a secret script that I get where it has all of Groot’s lines, but the catch of it all is the only words I can say it is, ‘I am Groot.'”

Oh my goodness! Imagine wanting to express so much but only being limited to that one line. (Of course, those who have seen the first movie know the tear-jerking “We are Groot” scene.) Groot as we knew him won’t be returning for the upcoming sequel, but Baby Groot will be joining the squad. He’s also voiced by Diesel, but it’ll be harder to distinguish the actor’s voice through the mask of high-pitched special effects.

Anyway, this explains why Diesel does so many takes and intonations when recording his dialogue, even choosing to go in character by walking into the recording studio on stilts. If you have never seen this clip of Vin Diesel doing his Groot voiceover for the first Guardians of the Galaxy in five different languages, please treat yourself and watch it ASAP. Watching him flex while growling “Yo soy Groot” for a minute and a half will truly make your day.
