Watch Dave East’s Latest Video, “It Was Written”
Dave East, poet.
Dave East’s breakthrough project, Kairi Chanel, is easily the rapper’s most complete and deliberate project to date. Shortly after its release in October, he announced a deal with Def Jam Records, a fitting culmination to the Harlem native’s steady-yet-rapid ascent from mixtape standout to easily Nas’ most commercially successful protegé.
To set the stage for Kairi Chanel, East titled the project’s intro “It Was Written,” a brooding, pensive detailing of the many philosophies and self-asserted values East encountered and developed as he navigated his precarious street life, and finding his way as a solo artist. It’s a comfortably presented arc, as well as an inspirational one; the latter sentiment is heightened when you consider the term “it was written” was popularized in hip-hop by Nas, who used it as the title of his 1996 sophomore album.
Above, you can watch the video for the track, featuring East delivering his poems in the foreground of some pretty emotive city scenery.
