New Music From Vince Staples, Playboi Carti, Francis and the Lights and More

Just because you blinked while you were thumbing through your apps doesn’t mean you should miss one of the many musical gems that come out every single day. We’re here to make your life a little easier and to make it sound a whole lot better with “The Listening Room,” our daily roundup of the new songs you need to hear.

Vince Staples
“Big Fish’
Producer: Christian Rich

I’m not saying that Vince Staples sort of dropped a club banger, but Vince Staples sort of dropped a club banger. The reason for the “sort of” is that “Big Fish” still features Staples’ tightly wound, deliberate flow from Summertime ’06. The inclusion of Juicy J on the hook, aside from giving the song a wider marketability, also slyly maintains the theme in Staples’ narrative: cash rules everything around him. Khari Nixon

Playboi Carti
“Just A Dream” f/ Migos
Producer: Brandon Thomas

“Is he even a rapper?” The question sounds like something you’d hear from an old head salty over changing times (kids these days, SMH), but it can also be a legitimate thing to ask, especially when not soaked in haterade. Does Carti’s style of repetition only count as rap because of the beats? We know Lei thinks so, 100 percent. But that’s a pretty liberating idea, that a genre has gotten so broad that artists can do as they please within the widest of guideposts. This is particularly relevant to the new version of “Just A Dream” because there are zero vocals for like the first half of it. And when Carti does jump on the track, it’s all chopped and distorted. Just because a rapper’s vocals are used in a Jersey club track doesn’t make it rap, so does this not count as rap either? Maybe we’re moving beyond the need to force everything into a genre. I’m with that. —Mike Steyels

Danger Mouse
“Chase Me” f/ Run the Jewels & Big Boi

Using a sample from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Danger Mouse linked up with RTJ and Big Boi for the track “Chase Me,” the first single off the soundtrack from Edgar Wright’s upcoming action-comedy Baby Driver. The film stars Ansel Elgort as a getaway driver that uses a personal playlist to time his escapes. The soundtrack drops on June 23, with the film arriving theaters the following Wednesday. In the words of El-P himself, “You want your money back, chase me.” Kyle Petreycik

Francis and the Lights
“May I Have This Dance (remix)” f/ Chance the Rapper
Producer: Grace Weber, Cashmere Cat, Benny Blanco

Francis and the Lights’ “May I Have This Dance” was already a cherry bomb of romantic hues and cheeky pillow talk, but when Chance jumps on this remix to belt, “I love you more than your mother” to his daughter Kensli, it hits an emotional apex that the original lacked. KN

twuan & bc.einstein
“boleta”

Twuan of mind body & beats linked up with bc.einstein for “boleta,” the first single from expand or expire’s compilation project that’s set to drop tomorrow. A short and dense production, “boleta” is built around a tasty horn sample and some desirous vocals. Salt Lake City ain’t playing around! KP
