Ve One next to his graffiti throw-up

NYC Graffiti Writer VE ONE Honored 20 Years After His Death

Yesterday, June 8, 2017, marked the 20-year anniversary of the murder of James Anthony Conti, better known to the graffiti community as VE ONE.

VE ONE was a prolific, early-mid ’90s street bomber from Queens whose throw-ups could be found plastered on roll-down gates, rooftops, parking lots and walls throughout the five boroughs. He was usually accompanied by his partners in crime SN and GIZ. Street graffiti legend JA XTC had this to say about VE:

“When I first started seeing their work (VE, SN and GIZ) I knew I had to step up my game,” JA said. “I’ve never met a person that had such a big impact on me in such a short amount of time.”

Tragically, Conti was fatally struck by a stray bullet on June 8, 1997. He was killed while hanging out with friends in Bushwick during the wee hours of the morning of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Tonight, the Avant Garde Gallery in NYC’s L.E.S will be hosting a commemorative fundraiser in his honor. A 4’ X 4’ replica of VE’s throw-up on a brick panel by GIZ will be raffled off. There will also be affordable canvases, VE posters, prints, stickers and tees for sale.

With a heavy heart GIZ reflects:

“VE wasn’t just a graffiti writer, he was my best friend. He was one of the people I shared some of my best memories with. His spirit was so larger than life. I’ve traveled the world over and still have yet to meet anyone quite like James. Tonight is a celebration for his family, friends and fans.”

Proceeds from tonight’s event will help his family, which includes his daughter—who was born one week after he passed—and her newborn son. The show will remain up until June 16.
