How did you start doing styling and creative direction?
I was introduced to styling through designing clothing. I launched my clothing line in 2009 during New York Fashion Week. From designing, I started styling and that lead to costume design and creative direction.
People think styling is a glamorous job but in reality it’s a lot of hard work. What advice do you have for people interested in pursuing a styling career?
Styling is definitely not as glamorous as it looks—it takes talent, taste and a bit of psychology. You really have to understand the client’s mind. You have to be an excellent communicator and sometimes even be a therapist for clients. Anyone interested in pursuing a styling career needs to be aware of all of those things.
What does style mean to you?
Style is a reflection of a personal life experiences and someone’s background. In a lot of ways, your personal style is like a walking bio.
How would you describe your own personal style?
I would describe my personal style as just that: personal. What I wear and how I look is a direct reflection of how I feel that day. The way I dress is the way I expect to be addressed.
What inspired your hat and fragrance brand?
My hat and fragrance brands are extensions of myself. The hats reflect a product I consider a daily essential, and the fragrance was inspired by my favorite scents. I wanted to give people a piece of my world. Building a brand took a lot of vision, patience and consistency. The most important thing is that you have to know your vibe and just stick to it.
What have been some of the highlights of your career?
Moving to Los Angeles in 2012 was a highlight for me. I’d also say that working with Larry King and Beyoncé was really special. And Celine Dion wearing one of my hats. I also styled Justin Bieber for the Met Gala—he won best-dressed that year.
What keeps you going during the low points?
When I’m going through struggles or feel helpless in a situation, I always turn to my family. My family is my biggest motivation.
Your IG bio says that you’re on a mission to save the world—what does that mean to you?
In order to save the world we must all make it our missions. If enough people did something small to impact humanity, the world would be a far better and safer place.
What does a perfect world look like to you?
In a perfect world, every child will have equal opportunities to achieve their goals and dreams.
