Trinidad James Dropped by Def Jam

It’s the news we all expected (especially Charlamagne)— Trinidad James has been dropped by Def Jam after making himself a pretty much 100% unmarketable. He spread the news on his Twitter account very early this morning.

Trinidad James’ downward spiral of unmarketability started with what will be his forever infamous New York City diss— or perhaps it really started with the release of his first record— since then, James has been steady proving he has absolutely no bars and a tendency to act fucking crazy. With Hot 97 and Power 105.1 refusing to play his shit and instead defend the City, there was little hope for James, regardless of the fact he had a $2 million Def Jam contract in his back pocket. Now that the contract is over, there’s no chance in hell he’ll be on the radio anytime soon.

So what is Trinidad James going to do now, with a song named after a label he’s no longer on and whatever is left of the $2 million after buying Versace shirts and gold veneers? Well, whatever happens to TJ, his story is symptomatic of a larger South vs. North battle. While TJ was too wack of a rapper to really be commenting on the state of hip hop, in some ways he pointed out an important problem. In the North, the two major radio stations are failing to put on for local artists, and the local sound is increasingly being influenced by Southern trap and Chicagoan drill (which is already trap-influenced). In the South, the resentment for not showing true love to Outkast still lingers, whether it manifests as Big K.R.I.T. firing shots or Wale wiling out about not getting his props.

With G-Unit reuniting, Cam’ron on the rise again, and Mobb Deep teaming up with The LOX to sample Biggie, New York’s older generation still loom large. It’s time to encourage a new generation to defend the City.
