‘The Abstract’ With Lil Durk

There’s no denying that the south is on top right now — but the current autotuned, melodic, half-rap half-sung warblings may have their modern roots located somewhere windier. Chicago’s own Lil Durk has been making waves since 2012, rising in tandem with Chief Keef to lead the city’s current guard. But in a city noted for its struggles with violence, Durk can be seen playing the middleman between Keef’s nihilism and Chance the Rapper’s hopeful gospel messages. 300 Days 300 Nights from earlier this year was a master class in rap with its emotions masked by a tough exterior, and the upcoming LilDurk2x seeks to build upon this model with a number of high-profile guests, like Ty Dolla $ign. During a recent trip to New York, we shot an episode of The Abstract with Lil Durk to document his perspective on how Chicago’s changed. “I tell my story, what I’ve seen and what I’ve grown up with. If you define me as a gangster by that… then I guess I’m a gangster,” he says, and after watching the clip above, it’s up to you to decide.
