“No battle is ever won he said,” William Faulkner wrote in his novel The Sound and The Fury. “They are not even fought. The field only reveals to man his own folly and despair, and victory is an illusion of philosophers and fools.”
That pretty much sums up what’s been going on with the music streaming service SoundCloud these past few weeks.
Most of us use SC to access tons of new music for free. No trial periods, no paywalls, no monthly fees. Why then were we surprised to learn that the company would have to lay off nearly 40 percent of its workforce? To any sensible person, it seemed only a matter of time until SoundCloud went under. So when an internal conference call leaked the news SoundCloud might have only 50 days to live the denials of their official spokespersons fell on deaf ears. Because we all know the internet is a merciless wasteland, a blood-soaked battlefield that makes Game of Thrones look like Power Puff Girls.
But just when it seemed all hope was lost, Lil Chano came to the rescue, pledging to save the day—which, we’ll see…
But one thing Chance The Rapper has definitely done is made us appreciate what the fuck we have. A poppin’-like-Orville-Redenbacher community of spanking-new music shared directly by creators to diehard fans. And that ain’t no joke. God bless Chance for challenging us all to remember—and publicly acknowledge—the artists we would not know about if not for SoundCloud. (“Music discovery,” to use the industry buzzwords.) Himself included, obviously. We gave you our list over the weekend.
