PREMIERE: Mr. Lif ft. Selina Carrera “Let Go” Video

If Hillary Clinton were describing early 2000s independent rap music, she would probably refer to Mr. Lif’s I Phantom with some combination of “Lit AF” “Woke” and “Goals.” And a more pedantic critic might trace the conceptual, everyman roots of Kendrick Lamar‘s To Pimp a Butterfly back to Phantom. But quoth Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson: It doesn’t matter!

What matters is Mr. Lif is back, recently linked up with the left-field high-minded hip hop legends over at Mello Music Group for his Don’t Look Down album — first since 2009. Today, we’re premiering the video for “Let Go,” a macabre and psychadelic love story shot by Jon Webb. Backed by Selina Carrera’s powerful vocals on the chorus, Lif spits dense tongue twisters like “The goal to search deeper grow smarter and think harder/Plus avoidance of the grim reaper/you don’t need to be a martyr.”

Lot to unpack. Watch the video above, and you can stream the full Don’t Look Down project below.
