PREMIERE: Money Makin Nique ft. Jace “That’s It” Video

In our last issue, we made the case that Atlanta’s voice, and its echo, in hip hop is undeniable. And while transplants like Money Makin Nique and Jace of Two-9 moved from their hometowns of Massachusetts and New York, respectively, the influence of Atlanta is apparent in the circles that they run with and the music that they create.

In an interview from three years ago, I could tell that Nique’s mentality resembled that of a veteran more than anything–cool, calm, and collected. The parallel to Mitch from Paid In Full is uncanny in his mission to earn funds, but his level of humility is what gives him the x-factor. Because with that humility, comes the confidence in his own skill and that others will recognize. To help cement his respect, we’re proud to premiere his new video for “That’s It.”

The Terrius and LightSkinMac11-directed video has dark overtones, literally and figuratively. Hit-Boy brings together heavy trap drums with orchestral flutes for an arrangement that MMN and Jace embellish with lyrics worthy of a SparkNotes annotation: “I’m the same young n*gga ya’ll shit on / Started out as an Outkast with a Speakerboxxx that got Love Below.”

We spoke to Money Makin Nique via email about the creative direction for the video, which you can read below.

Mass Appeal: Why did you choose names and words like “Oscar Wilde” and “degenerate” to highlight with definitions in the video?

Money Makin Nique: We wanted to put emphasis on wordplay with this video. I feel like people listen, but they don’t listen close enough. Every word in every bar is well thought out and planned. That goes for Jace and myself.

Did you reach out to Terrius and LightSkinMac11 to direct the video or did they reach out to you?

Not necessarily. Everyone around me is kinda like family. Terrius do all my stuff so I can’t say I reached out to em. If I do a video it’s already established he’s the one who shooting it. Even if he not the one to shoot, he’s still involved somehow. I usually just bring shit I wanna do to Terrius and he make it happen. Mac offered some ideas and I let em take over.

How much creative input did you have on the video?

I’ll say like 60% on this one. Again, it’s usually my idea and I trust Terrius to bring it to life.

Is there a reason that the video is so dark throughout?

Because when you tell me, “It’s dark,” or some shit I’ll know you watched it lol. I try to always put something distinct in the video, so when people tell me they saw it either they can complain or praise it. At least I know they really sat there and watched it.

You mention that you started out as an outcast. Did people not believe in your music early on and now they see you winning so they want to be your friend?

Yea. “Started out as an Outkast and with a Speakerboxx / I got Love Below.” Even though I’m from Atlanta, I’m not native to Atlanta. Same with Jace. So being accepted was definitely something that came in time. But it also means people being unwilling to listen. And they still don’t. It’s political here and I don’t have a cosign. So it’s an uphill battle. I’m not worried though.

And for your early fans, what happened to Bimmer Candidate?

At first I was gonna call the project Bimmer Candidate but I changed my mind because I wanted something that people could relate to in general. Bring Money Witchu is relative. It’s the same music, with just a different title. Plus by the time I finished the project, I was in an entirely different creative space.

“That’s It” is not attached to any project but look out for Money Makin Nique’s Bring Money Witchu album in the coming weeks. And if you haven’t, check out Nique’s latest release, “Hugo Boss,” below.
