PREMIERE: DJ Drez x Zion I “Giving You Something” / “Saving Souls” Mash-Up

Coming out of Project Blowed, the same LA movement that spawned Freestyle Fellowship, Busdriver, and Pigeon John, DJ Drez has been cooking up smoked-out vibes since the late ‘90s. His recent release Alpine Swift finds the disc jockey and beat-baker venturing into emceeing, while his partner Marti Nikko brings some honey-dipped melodies.

Drez picked a handful of cuts from the project for a companion EP titled Alpine Swift Mashups & Remixes. For the opening track from Apline Swift, “Giving You Something,” Drez blended in vocals from Zion I’s “Saving Souls” to make a song that is more than the sum of its parts. Zumbi’s lyrics fit on Drez’s mixture of stumbling percussion, slow-strum guitar, and synth blips like they were originally recorded on it. And you get to hear it first!
