Snoop Co-Star Michael Rapaport Responds to Trump: “He Brought All This Rough Stuff on Himself”

When the President of the United States takes time out of his day to tweet his feelings about a rap video, that’s crazy. When said tweet suggests “Jail time!” for said rap artist, that’s even crazier. That’s where we are a few days after Snoop blasted some clown named Donald Klump in the video for Badbadnotgood’s “Lavender” Remix.

Right wing mouthpieces wasted no time crying foul over the video, which was directed by Jesse Wellens and James DeFina. Bashing hip hop artists has been a favorite maneuver for politicians of all stripes ever since Bill Clinton lashed out at Sister Souljah. So far we’ve heard nothing from Snoop, but his little cousin Bow Wow did not bite his tongue.

T.I. was even more outspoken in Snoop’s defense.

We’ve also heard from the directors of the offending video, which is getting tons of free promotion from the unexpected presidential shout out.

But so far nothing from the man who got to clown around with Snoop. Yes, we’re talking about Michael Rapaport, actor, hip hop head, director of that Tribe documentary, and friend of Tha Doggfather—hate to blast ya, but I have ta!

MASS APPEAL caught up with the homie Michael Rapaport last night while he was at SXSW with his I Am Rapaport Stereo Podcast. Snoop’s co-star in the controversial clip gave his thoughts on the ensuing brouhaha.

How did the video come together?

Snoop asked me to be in it, and I’m friendly with him. I’m a huge fan of his. He told me what the video was, the concept, and I was all in. I’m been a fan of his and friends with him for a good period of time. He’s a good dude. Very, very, very down to earth dude. I didn’t think people were going to respond to the video that way. I think it’s good. I think that there’s a lot going on with the country and I think that creative people are speaking out, and I think it’s good. You know it’s crazy to see all the Twitter and Trump tweeting and all that stuff.

Did you think that the President of the United States would be tweeting about the video?

I don’t think the President of the United States should be concerned with music videos. There are bigger fish to fry. No, I had no idea it would turn into something like that. I was very surprised.

When Snoop described the concept to you, did you have any hesitation about anything?

I didn’t have any hesitation about doing it. Really, I’m such a fan of his. And I know at times his career has been through so many different metamorphoses, and continues to be… He’s one of a kind. Snoop is an icon. He’s one of one. There will never be another. The time that he came out, and his style, the way he rhymes and all that shit, his longevity. He’s one of one.

Hip hop means so much to me, and I was glad to be a part of it. Yeah they told me the concept of it, him and the director. But you never think that something is gonna turn into like, this national thing.

How do you get in character?

You know, it’s a video shoot, man. You show up and you do your thing. I honestly didn’t think much about it.

Was there just one take with the pop gun?

A couple of takes, like two or three.

What was the response like?

Just a lot of stuff on Twitter. Obviously when the president is tweeting, you get word of it, ’cause everybody’s watching all his tweets. And my first reaction was, “Don’t you have better things to be doing?” It just seems to me that there’s bigger things to be worried about than a Snoop Dogg video.

What’s your response to the suggestion of “jail time”? Is there still a 1st Amendment?

Nah, that’s not gonna happen. Nothing can happen. It’s an artistic statement.

Exactly, and we didn’t see anybody doing this to Obama for reason.

Yeah, the reason why people didn’t feel compelled to do this to Obama was because no one felt this way toward Obama. If people wanted to do it, they would have done it. Presidents get criticized all the time. This particular president is getting it more because it’s been a very divisive five or six months. He’s brought all this rough stuff on himself.

Have you spoken to Snoop since all this popped off?

Hopefully I’ll see Snoop at the show tomorrow night. He’s performing. I’m gonna go see.

You need to make a walk-on appearance. That would bring down the house.

Yeah, maybe I’ll do that. I’ll see if I can get up there. That would be cool.

This past Halloween, I didn’t know what costume to wear, so I put on a Donald Trump cap and a red tie and I walked around New York. I had ten year old kids cussing me out. There’s a lot of fear and loathing out here.

That’s funny. It’s a very energetic, very interesting political climate we’re in right now.. A lot of people paying attention. Doesn’t matter what side you’re on. I think it’s important that people are being informed and trying to stay on top of things. I think in the long run we’ll be a better country from it. I think it’s just going to have to get a little bit worse before it gets better.

It’s good to see hip hop starting all these conversations.

I agree. That’s a good point. Hip hop is so politically charged, and it was made on politics, going back to “The Message” and everything that came after it. And a lot of it has gotten lost in the mumble rap of it all. I think it’s only right that a hip hop artist, someone who’s as iconic and as genuine as Snoop Dogg, is doing something as provocative and talked-about as this. Hip hop is politics. Tribe has their record, and that got a lot of attention. It’s very political, and it’s only fitting that Snoop Dogg’s doing his thing.
