Meek Mill’s Attorney Reveals Philly Judge’s Personal Vendetta

News broke on Monday afternoon that Meek Mill will be returning to prison for a sentence of two to four years after a Philadelphia judge ruled that he hadn’t learned his lesson following multiple probation violations stemming from an initial 2009 drug and gun charge. Today, Meek’s attorney, Joe Tacopina, gave a statement that reveals an disconcerting personal history between Meek and Judge Genece Brinkley, one that could have ultimately tainted her deliberation in deciding Meek’s fate.

In a brief conversation with Billboard, Tacopina details specific incidents in which he believes Brinkley acted in a manner not fit for a judge, ranging from lurking at a community service session involving homeless people, to denying in court that she was aware that Meek had sought approval to travel to Atlanta for rehab despite confirmation from other present law enforcement officials that such a notice had been emailed to her.

But perhaps the strangest part of about Tacopina’s comments was Brinkley’s alleged Boyz II Men remake request:

But when you look at all the other facts, like a judge crossing the line of professionalism and traditional conduct, [who] will make the request that Meek Mill re-record a famous Philadelphia pop band, Boyz II Men’s song “On Bended Knee,” where he concludes with a tribute to her and mentions her by name in the song. And he, of course, was laughing and thought it was a joke, she said, “I’m serious.” He refused to do that.

Then there are Tacopina’s accusations that Judge Brinkley tried to persuade Meek to drop his current management firm, JAY-Z’s Roc Nation:

So, that, right there, was a totally an inappropriate request. When she requests he leaves his current management Roc Nation—which is one of the most important management companies in the world—and goes back to a local Philadelphia guy who has a spotted past because she had a personal relationship with him as manager, again, she’s doing something that a judge would never be doing, having a personal interest.

During court proceedings, Brinkley alluded to her personal history with Meek being an influencer in her decision, allegedly telling a prosecutor that they hadn’t been involved with his case long enough to realize that the rapper “does what he wants.”

“She’s enamored with him,” says Tacopina, who called yesterday’s events “an enormously grave mischaracter of justice” and “[a] really despicable version of what the justice system is supposed to be.”

For what it’s worth, Tacopina noted the support for Meek that’s already pouring in from high places. Late Monday, JAY-Z released a supportive statement and Philadelphia Sixers co-owner Mike Rubin is apparently up in arms as well.
