Mass Appeal Issue 56: On Deck

As told to Adrian Nuñez Photos by Aviva Klein

New York City’s hip hop scene is very much alive and kicking. The mecca of rap has produced a plethora of emcee deities, and the next generation shows promise to carry the torch accordingly. Look no further than artists like Bishop Nehru, Black Dave, Dave East, and Dillon Cooper; an eclectic array of spitters whose music equally speaks to the Big Apple’s street, skate, and hip hop cultures. Mass Appeal had the chance to catch up with the future of hip hop hailing from the city that never sleeps.

Black Dave

Age: 23.

Hailing from: Harlem, NY.

What crew you repping? Stone Rollers (SRSG).

Who are some of your biggest musical influences? 2Pac, David Bowie, Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, Lil B, and Poor Rightgeous Teachers.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while on tour? My craziest tour story has to be my first trip to South America with the Zoo York team. Brandon Westgate, Chaz Ortiz, Travis Glover, and myself went to Argentina and Chile for a skateboard tour. Our first demo we had over 2000 kids running and chasing after our van doing everything they could just to get near us. The more events that we did the more kids that showed up. It was eye opening to see that kids all the way out there knew who we were and respected what we did so much. Definitely a huge inspiration!

Plans for 2015: Turn pro for Zoo York, tour the globe skateboarding and performing music, bring hip hop to the punk rock scene, and get my license!

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while on tour? This summer will be my first time touring. I know some crazy things will end up going down. Stay tuned.

Plans for 2015: New projects, more visuals, and more pain on the way!

Dillon Cooper

Age: 22.

Hailing from: Brooklyn, NY.

What crew you repping? RIDICULOUS AND DRIVEN a.k.a R.A.D.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences? James Brown, Michael Jackson, Nas, Jay Z, Jimi Hendrix, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, and many more.

What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you while on tour? We were traveling through the middle of nowhere in New Mexico on this highway that literally went for hundreds of miles. I looked to the left, and saw a guy riding a mongoose BMX bike on the highway. It was the strangest thing ever. I wonder where he was going!
Plans for 2015: To let everybody realize who Dillon Cooper is. Maybe land a movie or something, release a new project. Take over the world!
