Listen to Drake’s “Talk Is Cheap,” Featuring Aaliyah and Static Major
A Drake x Aaliyah x Static Major cut sneaks to the internet
Drake is set to release a new “playlist”–it’ll likely be in album format and available for streaming much like Views—titled More Life some time this month. In fact, it’s safe to speculate that he has plans to release more music off the album this weekend during OVO Sound Radio. Ahead of that, a collaboration with late R&B greats Aaliyan and Static Major, “Talk Is Cheap,” has found its way to the internet.
Drake hasn’t commented on the song’s release, but there are a couple ways this song could’ve come together. In 2012, Drake and his trusted go-to producer, Noah “40” Shebib, announced plans to release an Aaliyah album, with her vocals laid over 40 production. There was staunch opposition to the idea, especially after Drake’s aggressive performance on the project’s only single, “Enough Said,” and it was eventually shelved.
Another possibility is, with a chance to release music on a “playlist” and not a traditional Drake album, Aubrey is using the opportunity to revisit his Aaliyah plans. Drake has a known obsession with the fallen star, and has an image of her face tattooed on his back near a tattoo of his mother. Static Major’s inclusion on the record is heartwarming; the multi-talent passed away in 2008, less than a month after a song he co-wrote, co-produced and featured on, Lil Wayne’s “Lollipop,” was released. “Lollipop” went on to be Wayne’s first #1 hit. In addition, Drake sampled Major’s voice on “Look What You’ve Done,” an ode to his mother on his 2011 Take Care album. Fittingly, Major dominated the songwriting component of Aaliyah’s self-titled 2001 album, the last project she released before her untimely death in August of that year.
