Lil Yachty Freestyles Over “Flava In Your Ear,” Backtracks Biggie “Overrated” Comment

As Lil Yachty continues his ascent through the ranks of hip hop, from relatively unknown internet sensation to Billboard hit-maker, the criticism has grown proportionately with the success. And in recent months, he’s made controversial comments about previous rap generations and Biggie Smalls. To assuage some of the tensions he ignited, Yachty clarified his ‘Biggie was overrated’ comment to Ebro Darden–a Yachty critic himself–on Beats1 Radio, and freestyled over classic Bad Boy, Craig Mack’s “Flava In Your Ear.”

Before the freestyle, Yachty and Ebro had a lengthy conversation about how Yachty is discussed in the media and discredited by “purists.” Later, Yachty admitted that he used the wrong choice of words talking about Biggie, and described in detail hearing Biggie’s slick wordplay on “Gimme the Loot” for the first time, evoking reminiscent laughs from both men. Previously, Yachty had called Biggie “overrated” during a Pitchfork video segment, drawing ire and criticism from all angles on social media. He’d also claimed that he’d never taken hip hop “seriously.”

You can watch a clip of their talk above, and check out the full conversation and freestyle below.
