Kevin Gates Drops “What If” Video and Hand-Written Letter to Fans

In April, Kevin Gates surfaced surfaced musically right around the time he was handed down a 30-month prison stint with “What If,” a spiritual flip of Joan Osborne’s “One of Us.” Today, he resurfaces with a symbolic video for the emotional record, as well as a hand-written letter addressing his fans, which he hasn’t done directly since fall of last year.

Gates is barely visible in his video, only appearing during brief cuts to a jail setting—a likely reference to his recent stint there—but the video for his newest single certainly resonates, using circumstances involving distressed youth and police brutality to illustrate the spirit of humanity that’s sometimes discarded in society. At the end of the video, Gates’s letter—which he also shared on Instagram in digital font—scrolls slowly through the frame.

“Dear Loyal Family,” the letter begins. “Disallow yourselves to be troubled in my time of absence. All of the great ones who came before and will come after me: Have had to go through this.” Gates continues on to reaffirm his faith before concluding, “I love you all. In closing I remain the same.”

Gates hasn’t yet revealed details about an upcoming album, but he has quite the act to follow. His 2016 LP, Islah, debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, moving over 110,000 equivalent-album units, a breakthrough performance and his best first-week finish to date.

If God were one of us, they’d want that rollout to get going, stat. Watch “What If” above.
