Kevin Gates Announces ‘By Any Means 2’ Mixtape
It drops this month
Kevin Gates’ current jail stint, which stems from a gun charge, has temporarily pushed him to the outskirts of hip hop’s attention spectrum, but the Baton Rouge native isn’t letting that kill his campaign. Yesterday, Gates teased fans with the release of a new video and a heartfelt note. Just a day later, Gates has expounded on his plans for the rest of the year, announcing a new project—the sequel to 2015’s By Any Means project—set to drop on Sept. 21, just two weeks from today.
Gates made the announcement on the heels of yesterday’s release of his “What If” video, which included a handwritten letter by the rapper, who assured fans that his faith was intact. In April, Gates was handed down a 30-month prison sentence after a bizarre arrest that resulted in him being found guilty of a gun charge related to a 2013 incident. It’s no surprise that the “What If” video is partially jail-themed.
In addition to the “What If” video, he’s also released an all-new track titled “Had To,” also slated to appear on By Any Means 2.
Gates’ steady ascent has made him a force to be reckoned with in the mainstream, despite his overall underground persona. Last year’s Islah nearly topped the Billboard 200, finishing as runner-up after moving 110,000 first-week units. With By Any Means 2, Gates could still have an impressive showing despite his legal issues given his cult-like fan base.
