Kendrick Calls “Urgent” New Album ‘DAMN.’
Cover art and tracklist revealed; Rihanna, U2 will join Cornrow Kenny
It’s been exactly 18 days since Kendrick Lamar told the world it had until April 7 to get its shit together, and 4 days since the Compton rapper gave everyone a one-week extension, but the hourglass is running low. On Friday, Kendrick will drop his third studio album, the follow-up to 2015’s To Pimp a Butterfly, and today we finally have an idea of what to expect. The “urgent” new LP will be titled DAMN., and this morning, K. Dot unveiled the artwork and track list.
Rihanna and U2 will join Kendrick on DAMN., per the official track list which, along with DAMN.’s artwork, is visible below. The artwork is relatively simple; it features a freshly-braided, white tee-donning Kendrick gazing outward—his head slightly bowed—with a troubling, disconcerted look on his face as he stands in front of a brick façade. The title, “DAMN.,” is emblazoned across the top in a red font that falls over the top of Kendrick’s head—almost like a magazine cover.
U2’s involvement with the project was made apparent last week when the project’s composer credits were revealed by iTunes, but Rihanna’s inclusion, on the song “Loyalty,” comes as a bit of a surprise. The album is set to include contributions from producers like Alchemist, DJ Dahi, BADBADNOTGOOD, 9th Wonder and more. “Humble,” the lead single off DAMN., has already given the project a smash hit. The single made its Hot 100 chart debut yesterday at No. 2, the highest rap debut on the chart since 2010.
