JR’s Mexican Border Art Installation Perfectly Portrays the Importance of DACA

JR—the artist responsible for beautiful, larger-than-life installations that sink their teeth into political movements and social causes around the world with a subtle, yet poignant message—looks to be pinning the tail on the donkey with his upcoming project along the United States/Mexico border.

Yesterday, the former graf artist teased his latest project on his Twitter and Instagram accounts, and the timing couldn’t have been more appropriate: It’s the image of a small child peeking his head over the U.S. border from the Mexico side.

While the details aren’t yet available, we can only guess it has to do with the way Donald Trump’s administration is approaching relations with Mexico, and more specifically, the immigrants who are simply trying to come over here for a better life. It’s also likely to do with the news that Trump announced an end to the DACA program, which granted 800,000 children amnesty from deportation as long as they have a clean criminal record and a path to employment.

It’s not yet clear when JR’s project will be finished, but he’s been posting updates over the past few days that show how the installation is being constructed since its onset late last month.

It looks like JR got a little visit from the U.S. Border Patrol, too.

Some of JR’s other installations include the Face2Face project, which aimed to highlight that despite their differences, Israelis and Palestinians are more similar than they realize. That project was one of the largest unauthorized art installations in the world. He also did a project called Women are Heroes, which shared stories from remarkable women around the globe in JR’s visually captivating fashion.

He told Beaux Arts magazine: “I would like to bring art to improbable places, create projects so huge with the community that they are forced to ask themselves questions. I want to try to create images of hot spots such as the Middle East or Brazil that offer different points of view from the ones we see in the worldwide media, which are often caricatures.”

Here’s a TED Talk JR did a few years ago where he talks about wanting to change the world with his art.

Much respect to this dude.
