jay-z drops "bam" video

Jay-Z, Sister Nancy and Damian Marley Hit Tuff Gong Studios For “Bam” Video

Weeks ago, when it was clear to everyone that a new Jay-Z album was imminent, footage of him hanging out in Jamaica hit the internet. It was later confirmed that he was in Jamrock on official 4:44 business with Damian Marley, but today we get to experience the expansive results of that collaboration. With the legendary Tuff Gong Studios serving as a backdrop, Jay-Z and Damian Marley bring their 4:44 collab, “Bam,” to life with the help of reggae luminary Sister Nancy herself, the inspiration behind the record.

Though the clip, which clocks in at just over six minutes, doesn’t play through like a continuous music video, Jay-Z does finally make a physical appearance, as opposed to “The Story of O.J.”—an animated feature—and “4:44”—a symbolic montage. The rapper traverses the streets of Jamaica, dipping in and out of Tuff Gong, the studio founded by the late Bob Marley in 1965 that’s now an international landmark. In it, Bob Marley recorded timeless records like “Stir It Up” and “Redemption Song,” and Sister Nancy added to its lore by delivering a rendition of her own timeless track, “Bam Bam,” which she freestyled in 1982 when she originally recorded it for her One, Two album.

“We’re vessels. The wind moves through us, we make the noise,” says Jay as he speaks with Marley and company at Tuff Gong. Throughout the clip themes of unity and legacy are repeated, consistent with Jay’s narrative on his 13th studio album. Speaking on the future her life and career has afforded her daughter, Sister Nancy proclaims, “that’s my Bam Bam,” not long after Jay is seen rapping, “I can’t take no threats I got a set of twins” inside Tuff Gong. Right on cue.

Until the video hits YouTube—a week after Jay’s last video, “4:44,” was released it hit YouTube—you can watch it on Tidal here.
