Janette Beckman’s Hip Hop Mash Up 2014

Janette Beckman, who’s we’ve previously featured on the site and in Mass Appeal Issue #54 , has an ill show coming up. It appears that the warm summer air has everyone in a community/collaborative vibe— you only have five more days to check out  Cey Adam’s “VERSUS”– accordingly, Janette Beckman and friends are getting in on the “summer madness.”

For her “Hip Hop Mash Up 2014” project, Beckman, known for her photographic documentation of rap in its formative years, has taken photos from back in the day and handed them off to various artists, graphic designers, and graffiti writers to reinterpret the provided photos. By adding their personal artistic touch to Beckman’s photographs, the artists then create original pieces.

Over the last two weeks, Pop-Up Art Event, who partnered with Beckman to produce the show, has been hitting folks off with sneak peaks of some of the pieces created:

CEY ADAMS | Keith Haring

CLAW MONEY | Salt & Pepa

T KID | Fab 5 Freddy

Artists involved with the project include Cey Adams, Chino (David Villorente), Claw Money, Eric Adams, Faust, Jester, Morning Breath, Revolt, Sp.One, Trike1, Alice Mizrachi, T Kid, and Sharp. The selected artists tried their hands at photographs of folks like Keith Haring, Stetsasonic, Salt & Pepa, Flava Flav, Afrika Bambaataa, EPMD, Slick Rick, Ultramagnetic MCs, Big Daddy Kane, Beastie Boys, and Dr. Dre.

Janette Beckman’s “Hip Hop Mash Up 2014″ opens tonight July 17 at Beckman studios, located at 30 Bond Street in NYC. More info can be found here, via The Art Guide.
