J Heat drops a Jersey club EP on British label Night Slugs.

J Heat Brings Jersey Club to London’s Night Slugs Label

Like a train behind schedule, Jersey Transit Systems has been a long while coming. In the time between this record being planned and actually getting released, J Heat has moved to Los Angeles from Orange, New Jersey and back—twice. But it’s finally here.

Revolving around public transit life, the EP is not only called Jersey Transit Systems, but it actually samples a number of bus and train noises as elements for some of the tracks. J Heat is known for making his own style of Jersey Club. The 24-year-old has always been on his own wave, which is probably how he ended up on the British dance music label Night Slugs. His sound is a little darker and more abstract than most Jersey club music, which falls in line with a UK label known for breaking the rules in dance music.

Part of the reason he left Jersey was because of a dearth of opportunities to express himself. “They clamped down on a lot of places we threw events at so we couldn’t throw parties,” he tells MASS APPEAL. “It gets lonely and frustrating sometimes, but a lot of like-minded people stick together for that reason.”

Those difficulties are expressed through four tracks built around Jersey club staples like triplets on the 3 count, vocal chops, and some Sing Sing breaks; but these are expanded on with a new vocabulary of his own. Minor key synths, growling vocals pitched way down and distorted, plentiful reverb, and percussion in unexpected places abound.

Have a safe trip and enjoy the ride.
