J Dilla The Diary

Mass Appeal Records Presents: J Dilla ‘The Diary’ (2002 Vocal Album)

It’s rare, in this day and age, to truly keep an album in secrecy, free of leaks. Since J Dilla’s untimely passing in 2006, we’ve received bits and pieces of the producer’s unreleased catalogue, but nothing major. For Jay Dee heads, 2002 album The Diary was something of a holy grail—unreleased vocal performances over Madlib and Pete Rock beats, new instrumentals from Dilla himself—and only a small portion of it was released back in 2014.

As you may have heard if you were just tuned into Zane Lowe’s Beats1 Radio show with Nas, Mass Appeal Records is proud to announce The Diary is slated for an official release—April 15. Reconstructed over the past 10 years from Dilla’s archives, the album is a result of original mixes left in a Detroit storage unit. You can read an interview with Stones Throw Creative Director Eothen Alapatt about the process of digging through the ultimate digger’s musical remnants over at Rolling Stone. To kick off the anticipation, they’re also premiering new track “The Introduction,” and, well, it’s everything a rabid fan has been waiting for.

The Diary will feature collaborations from Snoop Dogg, Bilal, Boogie, and more. You can preorder on iTunes here, and check out the full tracklist below.
