PREMIERE: Hollie Cook “Angel Fire”

When your dad is Paul Cook, drummer for the Sex Pistols, your mom Jeni Cook is a backing vocalist for Culture Club, your godfather is Boy George and David Bowie was once your babysitter for the afternoon, chances are you’ll turn out to be a fairly cool kid. Such was the case with Hollie Cook, a West London girl who began singing with The Slits when family friend Ari Up convinced her to skip school and hit the road with the seminal female punk band.

Since that time Hollie’s stepped forward as a solo artist, honing a sound she likes to call “tropical pop” but which the rest of London refers to as “lovers rock.” Recently signed to Merge Records, she’s now deep into her third album with Martin ‘Youth’ Glover who’s produced for the likes of U2, Primal Scream, The Verve, and Paul McCartney.

“I’m very honored to work with Hollie, one of the most exciting emerging singers and writers over the last ten years,” says Youth. “Hollie combines seductive and wistful melodies, underpinned with some sharp lyrical observations and clever word play combined with an exquisite and informed pop sensibility… It was a pleasure to work with an artist with such high-caliber criteria and vision.”

Today MASS APPEAL premieres “Angel Fire,” the first single from Hollie’s forthcoming album, due at some point in 2018. It’s the perfect tune for hot summer nights that lead to sticky situations. Let the music play on.
