Flatbush Zombies Announce ‘3001: A Laced Odyssey,’ Remix “Notorious Thugs”
Will a new LP give the trippy trio the creative space they need?
There was a time in 2012-2013 when the Flatbush Zombies were making some of the most interesting rap out of New York—A$AP Mob was tapping them for collabs, and Meech was bodying every guest verse. Joey Bada$$ and The Underachievers emerged around the same time, all part of the same Beastcoast collective, but the effect was largely an oversaturation. There can only be so many rappers repping Brooklyn rapping about opening your third eye. For that reason, it seems the content sphere grew weary of both groups, leaving only a handful of extremely #woke tumblr teens keeping up with their newest releases.
Not to say that the quality of their music’s decreased, it just no longer shimmers with the same originality when they first dropped. Flatbush Zombies’s last project was a short collaborative EP with The Underachievers, and before that it was back in late 2013 with the admirable Better Off Dead mixtape. Their ‘Day of the Dead’ singles releases over the past year whet the appetite for something more, and now we’ve got it: 3001: A Laced Odyssey, a full-length album, out March 11. With that announcement comes a new track, though probably not a single, given it’s a direct remix of Biggie and Bone Thugs’ “Notorious Thugs.” Producer Erick Arc Elliott says he remade the beat himself, with some additions, rather than sampling the original. Check out the homage, “Glorious Thugs,” below.
just for the record guys, I did not sample Biggie. I remade the beat I love the original so much
