When compared with his contemporaries, like J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar, Drake is on the shorter side of the politically outspoken spectrum. While Cole and Kendrick were making albums framed around the concept of being black in an era where race relations are being handled precariously and dangerously belittled, Drake was admittedly padding his Billboard stats. However, during his Europe Boy Meets World tour, Drake decided to break his silence about Donald Trump.
“People trying to tear us apart, trying to make us turn against each other,” said Drake during a Boy Meets World stop in London. “So tonight, my proudest moment isn’t selling tickets or having people sing my songs. My proudest moment, if you take a look around this room, you’ll see people from all races, all places, and all we did tonight was come inside this building, show love, celebrate life, more life and more music. And I just want you to understand, if you ever thought for one second that any one man is gonna tear this world apart, you’re out of your mothaf–kin mind.”
Sure, Drake could’ve been talking about Vladimir Putin, especially considering he was much closer to Russia than the United States at the time, but it’s pretty clear who these comments were directed to. Especially considering that Drake’s home country of Canada publicly supported those that were turned away from the U.S. last week as a result of Trump’s controversial travel ban. Drizzy rapped his brief speech with the sharpest dart of his subliminal rant.
“It’s on us to keep this s–t together. F—k that man!” You can watch video footage of Drake addressing his London crowd above. Do remember, his upcoming More Life project is slated to be out some time this month.
