DJ Premier and His ‘BADDER’ Band Are Going on Tour

DJ Premier is no stranger to crafting timeless music. The legendary producer and artist has been fueling hip hop and R&B with his patented brand of drums and scratches for nearly 30 years, both as one-half of Gang Starr and as a solo entity. Starting in 2015, Preemo took those time-tested gifts and applied them to the live music realm, forming a five-piece ensemble called The BADDER Band, touring Japan with them and releasing their first official record and video, “Bpatter.” Now, Premier has announced the group’s next solo venture, a 16-city tour, the BADDER Band Tour, kicking off on May 31 in Victoria, BC.

The BADDER Band comprises bassist Brady Watt, drum player Lenny “The Ox” Reece, horn and keys player Takua Kuroda, trombonist Mark Williams, and producer extraordinaire, DJ Premier. Their first release, “Bpatter,” took its time showing off each section of the live instrumentation, while maintaining a hip hop tempo and rhythm, which will likely be a hallmark of much of their upcoming work. “My addiction is turntables, drum machines, guitars, amps, and a lot of speakers,” says Premier in a press release. “I have fun doing a whole bunch of different styles with the band, because they fall into place so well, with everything that we’ve brought into the picture, no matter what it is.”

Though it’s been 14 years since the last Gang Starr album, Premier says his work with Guru—rest in peace—is the backbone to his band’s work. “I miss that dude so much,” Preemo says of Guru. “We have a long and undeniable track record.” On the BADDER Band Tour, the quintet will be revisiting “rare” Gang Starr cuts, as well as lesser known Premier productions.

In addition to the upcoming tour, Premier has several other major projects on his short-term itinerary, including—hopefully—a joint project with Nas. Already this year he’s released a single and video with Miguel, and served as the executive music producer for VH1’s The Breaks.
