Dave East Links With Lil Uzi Vert for “Don’t Try Me”
The Harlem and Philly rapper connect
Devotees of Mass Appeal Records’ very own Dave East know one thing — he is nothing if not versatile.
The Harlem-bred rapper has been teasing new music, and last night (Nov. 13), he unleashed what might become his next single — “Don’t Try Me,” featuring one of rap’s biggest it-boys, Lil Uzi Vert.
Over producer Luca Vialli’s hypnotic sitar melody and skittering trap drums, Uzi sets the mood early, rapping:
“Getting money yeah I started styling/Take your girl to the mall started shopping/Overseas yeah we went to an island/She fly free cause I’m platinum medallion/Fly like Delta I build up my mileage.”
Not to be outshined on his own shit, the second verse features East in true MC fashion — dropping braggadocio bars, name-checking all the things he’s got.
“Yea I got chicks out of college/I never got no allowance/I wanted Polo and I wanted Prada/Moschino casinos we doubled our dollars/I feel like Pacino I’m rolling with mobsters.”
Though it is unclear if “Don’t Try Me” is an official release or merely a buzz record, Dave East has been busy since dropping the Paranoia: A True Story, back in September.
That project — officially called an EP, though long enough to be considered a proper album — entered the Billboard 200 album chart at number nine, and with its broad subject matter and pointed raps, it seemed to indicate that great things were ahead.
Back when the project was released, he told Montreality that work had already begun work on a second installment, appropriately dubbed Paranoia 2, and it is plausible that “Don’t Try Me” will be featured on it. Regardless, with Uzi riding shotgun, there may be radio play ahead, or at the very least beaucoup streaming numbers.
While we wait to see what the song does, spark a blunt and watch Dave East put one in the air with your kinfolk at MASS APPEAL.
