Dave East and Beanie Sigel Hit North Philly in “The Real is Back” Video

Mass Appeal Records’ own Dave East has had a steady ascent to becoming a viable torchbearer for the uptown New York rap scene, which is inspiring to watch. And he’s done it all under the guiding light of Nas’ steady developmental hand. The Harlem native recently dropped his flagship project, Kairi Chanelnamed after his one-year-old daughter–which features “The Real is Back.” The cut with Beanie Sigel finds them trading bars in classic ’90s fashion. Today Dave and Beans have dropped a new video for the Chanel standout, which takes place in Beanie’s hometown of North Philadelphia.

“The Real is Back” is a coming-of-age record, but one that pays homage to the trailblazing done by Beanie Sigel and the prolific crop of rappers (think Roc-a-Fella and State Property) he came up with. “That’s like their Jay Z,” East tells Noisey, who premiered the video, of the Broad Street Bully’s relationship with the north side of Philly. “It was like I was outside with somebody that’s been my man my whole life but it was Sigel. It was crazy.”

Midway through the video, as Sigel’s verse cues up, he can be seen speaking to Dave with the air of a mentor, a subtle hint at the fact that East understands the importance of history and the lessons that stem from it. That said, Dave doesn’t cower in the moment; there’s likely a specific reason Beans even took part in the sacred passing of the mic, bar-trading format of the record. The young stud is up to the challenge, as he’s proven on more than one occasion in recent years, leaving little to dispute in regards to the song’s title.
