Dave Chappelle Talks First Encounter With Kanye West and the Judo of Prince

Dave Chappelle sits down with Jimmy Fallon on the latest episode of The Tonight Show.

In the interview, Dave recounts his first time meeting The Roots, after “being mistaken for a missing “Root” by a mall patron up in Portland, Maine. Surprised? The story gets a little more interesting when Dave recounts running into The Roots again at a Talib Kweli recording session at Electric Lady Studios in NYC.

While there, he said the studio was abuzz with collaboration, with D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def, The Roots, and Kweli occupying separate floors in the building. It would just so happen that all of the folks he ran into that day turned out to be the musical guests on the first season of Chappelle Show.

After briefly discussing the mystique and “judo” of Prince, (he’s everywhere and nowhere, all at the same time) Dave speaks on his first encounter with Kanye West. As you can imagine, it was one to remember.

Hit the video player up top to check out Dave’s unforgettable story about the first time he met The Louis Vuitton Don. You can also check out the rest of the interview below and hear about how he tried to sign up for Facebook and got hit with the “You cannot use celebrity names” message.
