Chance The Rapper Snags Emmy Nomination For ‘SNL’ Christmas Song

The NBC late night sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live has rose from the ashes, securing 22 nominations this morning for the 2017 Emmy Awards. And one of those is for Chance The Rapper’s song in the skit “Last Christmas,” which has been nominated for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. Chance gave a warm shout to the cast of SNL after hearing the news.

“Last Christmas” was Chance and Kenan Thompson’s skit on the Casey Affleck-hosted episode of SNL’s last season. In “Last Christmas,” Chance and Kenan parodied Run DMC’s holiday classic, “Christmas in Hollis” by making a song about the last Christmas with Barack Obama as president. Truly, it was the holiday song we all needed to hear a month before Putin’s boyfriend stepped into the Oval office. Chance doesn’t hold back with lines like “Imma hurt myself before we lose Obamacare” and DMC himself makes an appearance, offering the sage advice, “Never trust a white dude wearing no red hat.”

Chance wasn’t the only MC nominated for an Emmy this year. Donald Glover’s FX show Atlanta scored six nominations; three for Glover himself including a nomination for Directing, Writing and Lead Acting in a Comedy Series. Snoop Dogg also got one for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-competition Program for his cooking show with Martha Stewart.
