PREMIERE: Caleborate “Soul” Video

The Bay Area has produced some of the most creative and left field hip hop crews of all time: Hiero, Digital Underground, Quannum (aka Solesides), etc. So, even though cities like Oakland, Vallejo, Richmond, and Pittsburg are known for their mob music, it shouldn’t be too surprising that the area has spawned a refreshing young talent named Caleborate. His subject matter is less bricks and more books.

As a college student trying to balance school, a part-time job, and a burgeoning music career, life can be a grind. “Soul” addresses all of that, and yet still manages to be an optimistic ode to keeping your head up. Over funky-ass percussion and a soulful vocal sample Caleb pleads with us, “Don’t let ’em take your soul.”

Back in mid-September he dropped the Love Version of his video for “Soul.” It featured the rapper in a warehouse performing the cut like he was in front of tens of thousands. He’s jumping around hella animated, going-for-broke. Today we are dropping the Money Version of “Soul,” which is a totally different visual. In this take, we follow Caleb during one of his routine days. He wakes up, gets ready, ride his bike to college, takes classes, goes to his job, and ends up getting fired. The whole time there is a cash total in the top left corner of the screen, and as the day plays out various amounts are subtracted for expenses. It’s very similar to the MasterCard commercials where they breakdown what is being charged to the card and end with something intangible being labeled “priceless.” But in this case the initial $5000 total is his federal student aid money. Ha! Peep it.
