watch boogie's new video, "won't be the same"

Boogie is Making Some of the Best Music Videos in Rap

Boogie’s Thirst 48 Pt. II mixtape, released last year, has proven to be the Compton’s rapper’s breakthrough project. Though none of its tracks have impacted radio, he’s seen his stock rise thanks to a Rihanna cosign and a streak of stellar music videos. That run continues as Boogie drops an intimate clip for “Won’t Be the Same.” In it, Boogie stands surrounded by a plain, pitch black atmosphere, spilling his emotions of love lost.

It isn’t often that MCs are confident enough to strip away the glitz and bravado you frequently find in hip hop videos to deliver a performance as deliberate and honest as Boogie’s. The tactic helps the viewer focus on his lyrics, which detail the agony and regret he brought upon himself.

But a new, good Boogie music video shouldn’t be a surprise. The Westside rep has been on a tear, visually. The major standout is “Nigga Needs,” a haunting video that depicts a miniature Boogie as two different pieces in a museum —each the result of some bad decision-making. In one he’s bleeding helplessly from a bullet wound in his torso. And in the other, he’s got a black eye as he holds a young child. It’s the rapper’s reminder to himself to stay focused. While it would’ve been easy for Boogie to act out scenes of him procuring his “nigga needs” in the video—getting his girl back, buying a new car, etc.—he instead jumps to an alternate endings of that movie, forcing the viewer to put the pieces together. It was “Nigga Needs” that earned Rihanna’s attention.

Next came “Sunroof,” a video that’s far less artsy but just as good. Subtle camera cuts and body gestures captured by directors Gina Gammell and Riley Keough capture Boogie’s charm through as he interacts with the people who cross his path on an average day.

Even “No Way,” the first of the tracks on Thirst 48 Pt. II to receive a video, was a welcome variation on the typical posse celebration. As the lighting switches between Belly blue and hazy red, Boogie  two-steps his way through one of the album’s most hyped tracks. To break up the shadowy ambience, Boogie briefly takes his act outside, keeping the scenery fresh and the viewer captivated.

Both “Niggaa Needs” and “Sunroof,” currently have over two million views on YouTube, so Boogie’s videos aren’t being overlooked, but if he keeps making ones like “Won’t Be the Same,” then definitely be sure to keep watching.
