Big Wet’s Bananas “Turn Up On the Weekend” Video Just Made Country-Trap a Thing
It was only a matter of time
In 2017 anything is possible, including a country rap song destined to become the next viral hit. I’m not sure you’e even ready for it, but here it is: Producer Branchez‘s collaboration with rapper/country singer Big Wet, “Turn Up On The Weekend.”
Over a poppy trap instrumental, Big Wet comes through with some heavy country twang for the weirdest party anthem of 2017. The video is filled with what you would expect from a country-rap music video–cowboy hats, rodeos, horses, fishing and even a god damn monster truck–crossed with a bunch of tripped out, quasi country parody shit like riding a mechanical bull on a beach. And then there’s the hook, which is on some next level, “God Bless Merica,” shit.
“Cooler full of cold ones/rusted out Chevy/steaks over charcoal/game on the TV/I ain’t got a swimsuit/sure as hell gonna jump in/take another shot of Cuervo/turn up on the weekend.”
It’s hard to tell if the song is a valid attempt to make a country rap song (like Young Thug successfully did earlier this year,) or a ridiculous, tongue in cheek parody, made to go viral. Really, though, it’s probably both. It should also be noted that the internet meme connoisseur , The Fat Jewish is spotted in the video, as well as bottles of his beverage “White Girl Rose.”
Regardless, I’ve got to hand it to Big Wet for belting out one of of the catchiest country rap songs in recent times. Truly, a good laugh is what we need right now and it honestly doesn’t sound horrendous. It is definitely not as cringe-worthy as T-Pain and T-Swizzle‘s collaboration for the 2009 CMT Music Awards. And thankfully it isn’t some poorly executed attempt at addressing racism by combining the two genres like Brad Paisley’s “Accidental Racist.”
For what it’s worth, “Turn Up On The Weekend” is definitely the best song to play at a party this weekend just to mess with everyone’s heads. Whether its a joke or not is really up to you to decide. However, the award for the best country-rap crossover has got to go to Nelly and Tim McGraw.
