PREMIERE: Check Out The Wild Groove of Will Sessions and Amp Fiddler’s “Sivad”

It’s impossible to pin down Detroit outfit Will Sessions in any genre. They’re as much at home playing deliciously grooving renditions of Illmatic‘ instrumentals for Elzhi to spit over, as they are at Cliff Bells, one of Detroit’s most esteemed jazz clubs.

Their new album Kindred Live was recorded at the latter, with tracks culled from two separate live performances; one in 2010 and the other in 2012. As you can hear through our premiere of their Miles Davis cover “Sivad,” those were some intoxicating sessions.

“We wanted another keyboard player that could really dig deep into some jazz fusion,” the band states. Towards that effect, they added none other than Detroit musical icon and multi-instrumentalist Amp Fiddler to their lineup. “Amp really brings great energy everywhere he goes, so when you perform with him the music is affected by that, and some really amazing things happen on stage. The song ‘Sivad’ is a good example of that.”

Miles Davis’ original rendition of ‘Sivad’, found on the album Live-Evil, is a 15-minute journey, but Will Sessions and Amp Fiddler boil their version down to a heady brew lasting a little over 4 minutes. Listening to the way the track seems to almost burst at its seams, it’s hard not to get swept up in it. “We were having a lot of fun and you can hear it in the music. The collaboration seemed very natural and we enjoyed working with each other,” the band notes. “We have been working together ever since.”

This all bodes well for the album, which is available to preorder as of now, and drops on CD, vinyl and digitally on November 3.
