A Tribe Called Quest Announces Final Album, to Be Released Next Month
November will be a huge month for the legendary hip hop crew
A Tribe Called Quest have had a tumultuous 2016, as they’ve received an encouraging outpouring of love and support from fans and critics in the wake of the death of critical group member Phife Dawg, who forever changed hip hop in his 1990’s heyday. Months after his passing, he’s still receiving touching acknowledgements–a portion of Linden Blvd. will be renamed Malik “Phife Dawg” Way next month, and it’s also been announced that November will also bring about the final A Tribe Called Quest album.
In a note posted to Facebook, Q-Tip detailed how we arrived at a new ATCQ album, mentioning that the process began after their reunion on The Tonight Show last year. He was also sure to mention that there were no archived Phife Dawg verses appearing on the upcoming LP; all the material on the LP will have been freshly recorded by all participating members. The Tonight Show episode on which the reunion took place aired last November, and Phife passed away this March, meaning there’s a chance that in those four months the late legend recorded a significant amount of material.
We’ll be receiving the new album on November 11 via Epic Records. You can read Q-Tip’s full message to fans below.
The last A Tribe Called Quest studio album, The Love Movement, was released in 1998. Welcome back, guys.
