Why “Birdman” Will Look Like No Other Movie This Year
This isn't your typical superhero movie.
If you’re not hyped about Birdman yet, you should be. Instead of your typical superhero movie, the film is a dark comedy with psychological drama overtones. It’s also directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, who is known for his strong sense of scene and cinematography. Iñárritu was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on Babel in 2007, and Birdman is his first film since 2010.
The film stars Michael Keaton as a washed-up actor who became famous by playing Birdman in a movie, before losing it all to booze, drugs, and women. The film is centered around Keaton attempting to revive his career by putting on a Broadway show featuring an adaptation of Raymond Carver’s short story What We Talk About When We Talk About Love.
In addition, Birdman was shot by cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki, whose work includes last year’s Gravity. The technique of filming Lubezki used makes the finished film look like one long extended take. For a behind-the-scenes look at Lubezki’s work, check out his amazing Instagram account.
The supporting ensemble cast includes Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Andrea Riseborough, Zach Galifianakis, Naomi Watts, and Amy Ryan. Check out the full trailer for the film in the player up top.
