Weekly Mixtape Round-Up: Dipset, Tink, Young Dolph, and More
It's like I don't even know why I am writing this column this week because everyone has their entire beings tuned into this Meek Mill / Drake drama. I personally don't care who "wins" this little #rap #sports match, but I just want to keep seeing memes because memes are cool and interesting. This beef is not. Anyway, some good shit dropped this week, so in between waiting for Nicki to speak up, check out what arrived on the mixtape pipeline.
Dipset - 'American Dream'
Okay, first off, this is a "Dipset Presents" project, but don't let that deter you at all. There are like 4,000 people on this two-sided project (not a single guy you're looking for though), but some of it is decent. Okay, I'm lying, I only played the last track, which was Chinx's (R.I.P.) "How To Get Rich." I'm going to listen to this when you do. Let me know. If you don't, then I won't. #Solidarity.
Audio Push - 'My Turn II'
Okay, so in a nutshell, Audio Push gave us this EP thing because they still haven't blown all the way up, even after that The Good Vibe Tribe mixtape. So here they take a bunch of classic instrumentals and slap solid new bars over them. Best of luck, guys.
Turk - 'Get Money Stay Real 2'
I didn't know Turk had a Get Money Stay Real part 1, so that shows you my level of investment in this project. I mean, Turk has got a decent flow, and if this is the first of two-part mixtape series you're hearing, then it's enough to make you something of a fan. At least he's on my radar more now. Plus, that Lil Wayne-assisted "You Mad Yet" is pretty tough.
Young Dolph - '16 Zips'
Everyone's sometimes favorite guest feature, Young Dolph, brings us a new one. I'm a little annoyed because there are only 14 zips here, not 16. What the hell is a zip anyway? I am considering it to be a track, but I also turn to Urban Dictionary for everything. Whatever, Young Dolph, new mixtape, yeah.
Tink - 'Winter's Diary 3'
Tink comes through with Part 3 of her Winter's Diary mixtape series. There are only 10 tracks, but it's a nice surprise to have some new Tink. She grabs a diverse cast of producers, like C Sick on the trippy-ish-slash-Jhene-Aiko-sounding "I Like," and of course Timbo brings the Indian flutes on "L.E.A.S.H." Give this one a spin, it's worth it.
OJ Da Juiceman & Zaytoven - 'Juice Vs. Zay'
OJ keeps trying it, doesn't he? This mixtape is so fucking terrible, but I feel like that's why we keep checking for him. That and his rock solid ad libs. I mean if this is really like a OJ Vs. Zaytoven battle, then Zaytoven clearly won, because I only listened to this for the beats and the "Ay! Ay! Okay!" Apologies if you're like some gigantic OJ fan. I didn't mean to shit all over your king like that.
Mike WiLL Made-It - '#InstrumentalTuesdays Vol. 9'
Well, if we're being completely honest, I skipped last week's coverage of these instrumental series hoping it was over by this week. It's not. Such is life. I'm putting money on him stopping at 10. What say you? Anyway, this week we get beats from 2 Chainz' "Where You Been," plus Two-9's "Where the Money At," and Project Pat's "Never Been A G." So enjoy. Or don't.
