Key and Peele’s comedy makes the ridiculous seem normal and vice versa. Their concierges doubling as Liam Neeson(s) fans and their quietly effeminate thugs are what television needed to get rounder characters from known faces. The “East/West Bowl” is a staple of their otherwise wildly variant sketch repertoire.
Basically, they recite the names of imaginary athletes with all the prefixes and suffixes of the most difficult names in sports. It plays on the notion that some names are way too complicated for real life, and in the context of a professional game, that’s just plain laughable. This time, however, Key and Peele add a twist by including real athletes with absurd names…like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, an NFL rookie who is called by the sound we make when laughing.
