Through appearances on Earl Sweatshirt’s Earl album, his collaborations with Odd Future’s Mike G, and his own Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1 mixtape Vince Staples has carved a niche for himself with his dark, riveting depictions of life in his native Long Beach, California. Now Staples has linked up with producer Michael Uzowuru for a new collaborative project, Winter In Prague.
The two first teamed up to create the tracks “Versace Rap” (from Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1) and “Twitch.” Michael’s stark, plodding, piano chord- laced “Versace Rap” provided the perfect backdrop for Vince’s stone-cold rhymes. The somber soundbed of “Twitch” serves as a perfect platform for Vince’s true to life storytelling. Their talents were so complementary that the two decided to work on a full project together and the result is, titled Winter In Prague.
For Winter In Prague, Michael said his production inspiration was derived from the Kanye West’s “Diamonds From Sierra Leone.” “There’s a certain feeling that that evokes,” Michael says. “I based all of the music on Winter In Prague off of that.” Now the wait is over, Winter In Prague is available for free download from Datpiff. Mass Appeal caught up with Vince and Michael out in Los Angeles as they were putting the finishing touches on the project. Watch the video, download the tape, act like you know!
