“You have a magazine publication that say I’m underrated or a blog site that say I’m underrated, but the bank say I’m overpaid.”

The Memphis, TN born-and-bred rapper Yo Gotti (aka Mario Mims), has built a career on his earnest words and Southern roots. But who is the person behind the flashy cars and hustling ways? Mass Appeal sought to find out. While in NYC promoting his new album, I Am, Yo Gotti took time from his packed press schedule to let us spend a day inside his world.

From humble beginnings dealing drugs on street corners to a decade of underground hits including stints with labels RCA and Cash Money and now Epic Records, Gotti gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the life of the man behind the music.

Gotti is a businessman first, and recording artist second, but has a relentless devotion to his fans. Watch as he races from one interview to the next, drops in for meet-and-greets and signings, and in the process, peels back layers, exposing a deeper side of one of the South’s most beloved emcees. Finally, he closes out his night with a bang, performing tracks off I Am for a packed crowd at legendary music venue BB Kings in Harlem.
