Anytime a rapper jumps on DJ Premier’s instrumental for “Mass Appeal” the fish stop swimming for a second. Listen to Tito Lopez from Mississippi go off with a slight flip of the original beat, and you might have to change the water in the tank. He craps on his competition, jockeying for the spotlight claiming he was born with mass appeal (genetically). We’d like to think the young spitter had our magazine as a pillow in the crib at one point or another. The upgrade to the Gang Starr classic was produced by The Futuristiks, off Tito’s Hunger Game Mixtape (out now). Given it’s a staple to New York rap history, it’s where the East Coast resonates in Tito’s pocket of the south; his West Coast influence, draws from Dr. Dre who Tito also worked with. The best of both worlds are part of his blueprint. Look for Tito’s debut album, coming soon. Download The Hunger Game Mixtape here.
