Minneapolis police have arrested three suspects who they believe are responsible for shooting five people at a Black Lives Matter protest over the death of Jamar Clark. A SWAT team arrested 23-year-old Allen “Lance” Scarsella after a brief standoff on Tuesday afternoon. After Scarsella’s arrest, two other suspects, 21-year-old Nathan Gustavsson and 26-year-old Daniel Macey, turned themselves in.
Black Lives Matter Minneapolis posted a video they discovered, which shows two masked men, identifying themselves as “Saiga Marine” and “Black Powder Ranger,” threatening protesters while driving to the scene of the shooting. In the video, the driver explains that “we are on our way, we’re going to knock this shit out. And yes – we are – we are locked – locked and loaded,” he adds, displaying a handgun to the camera. At end of the video, the driver signs off by saying: “Stay white.”
Although the men in the video were wearing masks, cops were able to identify Scarsella as the passenger in the car from his Facebook picture. Authorities also discovered that Scarsella’s cover photo was a picture of the “Bonnie Blue” Confederate flag, captioned: “This isn’t the somalian flag, (by the way).” The suspect’s “likes” include numerous pro-gun groups, as well as a military veterans militia group. Gustavsson’s Facebook photo shows him wearing a Belgian army jacket and holding a rifle.
Demonstrators who have been camping out near a Minneapolis police precinct have reported being harassed by masked men in military clothing for several days. Authorities discovered a trail of emails and forum posts in which white supremacists discussed strategies for disrupting the protest, which they referred to as a “chimpout.” One unidentified individual asked in an email: “Do you know if the BLM n*****s are planning to protest again tomorrow, and if so, at what time?”
The three suspects are currently jailed on probable cause for assault, but police have not yet charged them in connection with the shooting. Investigators are reportedly looking into claims that the suspects fired in self-defense.
