There’s a Rapper Named 22 Savage, Because 21 Savage Was a Movie That Needed a Sequel

The sequel is never better than the original, right?

The cool thing about that pretty terrible, pretty clever headline is the fact that there’s actually a movie series that follows that pattern. Remember 21 Jump Street? That there’s-no-way-this-will-actually-work team of Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube that actually worked? Well, 22 Jump Street followed just a few years later. Maybe that’s what 22 Savage has in mind.

22 Savage isn’t a typo. That’s the name of a real rapper that used to go by Mighty Mike when he was a comedian. This isn’t a spoof though, and Mike isn’t downplaying the obvious notion that he directly copied 21 Savage’s moniker and persona, as per a conversation with SOHH.

I jacked 21 Savage’s name. I jacked him out of his name. I just changed the number. I just jacked him. He’s gotta take his licks. I just felt like jacking him. 22 Savage. I’m really a savage out here. I’m really in the slums. I’m in the trenches.

The name isn’t where it ends. 22 Savage has a new mixtape on the way, and we’re going to give you just one guess–oh, screw it. It’s called Savage Mode. Yes, the same title as 21 Savage’s critically-acclaimed project with Metro Boomin. The one they’ll be performing at Metro’s “Young Metro Don’t Trust Trump” show in New York in November.

Don’t take our word for it. Below are some examples of 22 Savage’s recent work, including “Jumpin,” one of his most popular videos to date, and a song on which he delicately acknowledges the absurdity of his career’s trajectory. Sort of.

This ain’t 21 bitch, this 22.

End quote.
