Do the right thing, and help the Emmy-award winning director with his new joint.

She’s Gotta Have It, Do The Right Thing, Crooklyn, these are just a few of the classic films that have helped Shelton Jackson “Spike” Lee garner his legendary status in the film industry. With over three decades of work in his filmography, it’s easy to forget that at the end of the day, Spike Lee is an independent filmmaker. “The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint,” a Kickstarter campaign started by the Brooklynite, is a reminder that even the most celebrated directors have to compete to finance their films. As Spike puts it, “Indie Filmmakers are always in search of financing because their work, their vision sometimes does not coincide with Studio Pictures.” Lee is taking his search for the financing of his latest thriller straight to the source – his fans.

His Kickstarter campaign has a goal of $1,250,000, with $712,133 pledged at the time of this article. While the minimum pledge to back the project is only $1, more generous contributors will be rewarded in kind. For example, a pledge of $250 or more will earn you access to the premiere of the film, and a pledge of $10,000 will earn you dinner and courtside seats to a Knicks game next to the man himself.

While we all won’t be able to shell out 10 grand like Steven Soderbergh, the main thing Spike is looking for is your support. So if you’ve ever enjoyed the hilarious antics of Mars Blackmon, marveled at Denzel Washington’s performance in Malcom X, or caught hell from your mom for watching He Got Game (guilty on all accounts), then head over to the Kickstarter campaign page and show his new joint some love. By any means necessary.
