If you don’t know BADBADNOTGOOD already, you should. Hailing from Toronto the jazz trio consists of Chester Hansen on the bass, Alex Sowinski on the drums, and Matt Tavares on the keys. After catching the attention of Odd Future general, Tyler, The Creator, they went on to put out their first album BBNG back in 2011. They followed with another stellar project BBNG2. Although both albums were somewhat cover heavy, BBNG has always stayed true to their jazz background and created extremely experimental tracks.
In 2014, BBNG is gearing up to release their third project together aptly titled, III. Having already released three dope tracks from the album, all original joints, it’s clear 2014 is going to be a breakout year for the trio. They’re performing this Friday at Mass Appeal’s SXSW Takeover with Nas, Flying Lotus, A$AP Mob, and others. Trust, this is not a band to sleep on. We caught up with the group to talk about new music, SXSW, and some helpful festival tips.
Mass Appeal: Your new album is on the way, are there any surprises? Should we expect to hear any new collaborators on the project?
BADBADNOTGOOD:: If we told you then they wouldn’t be surprises! This album is actually entirely instrumental and completely surprise free – unless people are surprised by hot jams. The only collaborators on the album are with some very talented friends and we’re hoping the music will speak for itself. Some of the future jams we are working on will be with more friends and secret guests.
MA: What is your favorite part of SXSW?
BBNG: It’s an amazing festival all around. We like making new friends, biking around Austin, hitting up parties and seeing great shows.
MA: You guys were at SXSW last year. What tips do you have for people going this year?
BBNG: Stay hydrated and be safe. Also, traveling in groups is a strong move. Pull strings to get into parties if you can to avoid long lines. Most importantly, be yourself and support the art!
